About the Webinar Series

ED MAT initiation is an emerging best practice. The requirement for a waiver to provide some forms of MAT was lifted in December 2022, enabling this treatment to be more readily available. However, there remains a significant gap in knowledge about treatment, as well as a reluctance to engage with people with OUD. These trainings aim to close that gap for medical professionals. Participants will also receive one (1) credit toward the DEA requirement for each session attended, for a total of four (4) credits (CME pending).

Session 1: Overview of the Opioid Challenge

Friday, June 16, 2023 | 12pm CT

This session will provide an overview of the issue and the series, with a focus on the breadth of the problem, why EDs are a focal point for initiating treatment, the different treatment options, and the impact of treatment, counseling, and referral on treatment persistence.

By the end of the training, participants will be able to:

  1. Understand life context for OUD patients, remembering stories shared by patients themselves.
  2. Understand how stigma may (intentionally or unintentionally) be conveyed and its impact on patient agency and capacity.
  3. Use new ideas and language that better convey respect, encouragement and hope to patients.
  4. Encourage patients who may not yet be ready to stop using.

Session 2: Overcoming Stigma and Bias in Opioid Treatment

Friday, June 23, 2023 | 12pm CT

This session will focus on evidence for systemic bias in OUD treatment (as part of a larger issue of bias toward and disinvestment in marginalized communities). The session will cover stigmatizing language and the implicit beliefs it conveys, as well as alternative ideas and language that are more likely to activate patients' own agency and capacity. Patient descriptions of good and bad ED experiences will bring this material to life.

Technical Questions

Friday, July 14, 2023 | 12pm CT

This session is intended to focus on the patient assessment and dosing process, treating pain in opioid-dependent patients, and other clinical questions related to initiation of buprenorphine in the ED.

By the end of the training, participants will be able to:

  1. Understand how to assess a patient and determine the appropriate dosage for buprenorphine initiation.
  2. Understand common dosing questions, such as how to treat pain in opioid-dependent patients.
  3. Understand where to get real-time information for clinical questions arising in the ED related to buprenorphine initiation.

Session 4: Treatment and Referral Workflows,

Billing and Resources

Tuesday, July 25, 2023 | 12pm CT

This session is intended to provide information about the underlying systems changes needed to support ED buprenorphine initiation, SBIRT and referral: workflows, the new billing code, new referral resources, and sources of ongoing education and support.

By the end of the training, participants will be able to:

  1. Understand the underlying changes to workflow, EHR documentation, and billing necessary to support their changes in treatment practices.
  2. Understand the documentation required for the new G2213 billing code, enabling ED reimbursement buprenorphine initiation, SBIRT and referral.
  3. Understand referral options, including MAR NOW, introduced in 2022 to provide immediate treatment, counseling and long-term referral for any OUD patient.
  4. Understand where to go for immediate assistance with dosing or other questions.
